A crate is a box. A covered crate is a den

Dogs don't relax in the open

Watch where your dog chooses to sleep, and it's rarely the middle of the room. It's under the table. Behind the sofa. In the narrow gap beside the bed. Given the choice, dogs prefer a secluded, dim, and enclosed space — a den.

An uncovered wire crate offers none of that. It's a lit box with a view of every doorway, every window, every set of headlights sweeping across the ceiling. For a dog who's already scanning, that's four more sides to keep watch on.

The Den Cover closes three of them.

What it changes

Heavy blackout polyester drops the light and cuts the sightlines, so there's less to react to and less to guard. For a lot of dogs that's the difference between lying down properly and lying down with their head up.

It earns its place fastest in the situations you're probably already dealing with:

  • Night settling — for puppies whose crate crying is really "I can see the whole room and I'm alone in it"
  • The first weeks with a rescue — genuine cover during decompression, when the world is still too much
  • Fireworks and storms — dims the flashes when the flashes are half the problem
  • Holidays and visitors — a place to retreat that isn't shut behind a bedroom door
  • Long summer evenings — when it's bright at 9pm and nobody's sleeping

Built to stay put

Roll-up front, back and side panels secure with straps and toggles, so you can open one side, two, or all of them. Start with the front rolled up and one side covered, then close more as your dog gets comfortable — the adjustability is the point, not a bonus.

Reinforced heavy-duty polyester with double-stitched seams. Wipes clean. Holds shape after months of use. In black, so it disappears into a room instead of announcing itself.

Airflow — read this bit

Cover three sides, not all four. Leave the front or one full side rolled open so air moves through, and never use a fully closed cover in a warm room or in direct sun. Dogs cool themselves by panting, and panting needs moving air.

If your dog has never been covered before, do it gradually. Cover one side for an evening. Add the second the next night. A dog who's suddenly enclosed with no warning can find the change more stressful than the light ever was.

Pairs with

Put the ZenCalm Den inside it and the Den Cover around it, and you've built the same thing from two directions — a soft floor and a dark ceiling. The collar handles the baseline underneath both.

Measure your crate, not your dog. Crate sizes are printed on the box or the frame label. If yours falls between sizes, order the larger — a slightly loose cover works, a tight one won't close.
