Watch where your dog actually chooses to sleep

Not the middle of the room. Under the table, behind the sofa, wedged into the gap beside the bed — somewhere with walls. Given the choice, dogs pick enclosed. It's the same instinct that made a den in the first place, and it hasn't gone anywhere.

A flat mat gives them a soft surface. It doesn't give them any of that.

What the shape does

The Den's raised rim is the whole product. A dog curls in and their back is against something. Their head is supported. Nothing is behind them.

That's not decoration — it's the difference between a dog lying down and a dog lying down properly, with the shoulders dropped and the head resting rather than half-up and tracking the room. Some dogs will burrow under the rim entirely. Some will hook their chin over it. Both are dogs choosing to be enclosed, which is exactly what you want to see.

The deep-pile plush also gives them something to knead and nest into before settling — the circling and pawing most dogs do before they lie down finally has somewhere to happen.

Where it earns its place

The first weeks with a rescue. A dog who doesn't yet know where they're safe benefits enormously from a space that's obviously, physically theirs. Put it in a quiet corner, not the middle of the living room.

Senior dogs. The rim supports the head and neck, and older dogs who struggle to get comfortable often settle faster with something to lean into.

Night-time. Beside your bed, or inside a crate with the Den Cover over it.

Storms and fireworks. Somewhere to retreat to that isn't behind the toilet.

When it arrives

It'll be flat. The Den ships vacuum-compressed, which is how we keep it affordable to send. Open it, give it a few hours, and shake and fluff the rim by hand. It'll take full shape within a day. This is normal and it isn't a fault — but we'd rather tell you now than have you open the box and think something went wrong.

Size chart

Between sizes? Size up. The rim takes up more room than it looks like it will, and dogs settle deeper when they can curl without pressing into the sides. The supplier says the same thing, and they're right.

You need to fill in the inner-diameter column from a physical sample. It's the single most return-preventing number on this page — outer diameter is what everyone publishes and it's not what the dog lies in. Measure the flat sleeping surface across the middle on each size and put those numbers up.

Also worth adding: "Sized by curl, not by length. Dogs who sprawl flat rather than curl may prefer a size up or a flat mat." Not every dog is a curler, and the ones who aren't are your refund risk.
